Life in Band!

Life in Band!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in Band at McCullough Junior High? Band is a very popular elective for students to take. I asked Mrs. Maher, the main band director, what band class is like and how the experience is like.

First, I asked Mrs. Maher about her background and how she became a band director. “I was a biomedical engineer at the start, and I loved science and band…. But once I joined band and started to do a music major, I loved it!” Mrs. Maher said. I was surprised when she said this because it’s amazing how a person can turn from a biomedical engineer to an awesome band director! Mrs. Maher also said that she herself was also surprised because no one could have guessed that band was the right path for her future.

Second, Mrs. Maher told me about how the band community handles and helps students with financial problems. “If money is an issue, the great thing is that we have ways to help students who can’t afford things. I’m really grateful that we have such a supportive community of families that if money is an issue, we can take care of you.” This made me realize how caring she is toward expenses and being flexible with her requirements. This is a really touching aspect of the band community, making sure that everyone is represented during financial hardships.

Next, Mrs. Maher explained to me her ground rules for students in the band hall. “Listen when the teacher is talking, play as a group, be respectful of others at all times, and never, and I mean never, chew gum in the band hall.” She also told me how important it is to follow the rules for everyone’s safety and happiness. As long as people take responsibility for their actions and directions, she’s happy.

Finally, Mrs. Maher described the two uniforms used in band. She described the professional and normal outfit.  “Whenever we have a super fancy concert, we wear all black. Black pants, and a long-sleeved black shirt. That way, everyone looks so good on stage together and everyone is uniformed. Our more casual performances like pep rallies, we just wear our band T-shirt, and you can wear shorts, pants, or whatever you wear to school that day.” She mentioned that the black long-sleeved shirt is provided by the band team and all you have to do is pay the $15 fee.

In conclusion, Band is a very fun elective that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Students have to participate in events and pay commitment fees. At the end of the day, as long as you pay attention, you have fun!
