Every morning the halls fill with the sound of music as the Highland Girls practice. They spend hours every week practicing, but why is this intense dance important to members and other students?
Highland Girls is a drill team here at McCullough. They perform at events year-round and are always practicing. The team puts in a lot of effort, but what do they get back and why do they love it? We sat down with seventh-grade Highland Girl, Ella Bobos, to find out.
Bobos tells us, “I’ve gained friendships and strength. I’ve learned to work with people even when I don’t have the same opinions as them.” She feels that throughout the year she has learned many life skills from dance. “You learn to work as a team,” Ella says. The skills and lessons they learn in Highland Girls will be carried with them for life.
Ella explains that “We’ve all grown as dancers, and we hype everyone up.” As well as teaching members, Highland Girls also helps the school by promoting school spirit and traditions. “My favorite part is football season. You get to perform for the school,” says Ella. Additionally, she explains that her passion for dance came from watching the generations of Highsteppers before her. “I have looked up to the Highsteppers ever since I was really little. I used to go to the games as a baby.”
These traditions, enthusiasm, and life skills make Highland Girls very important to its members and the school community.
