Agriculture elective at McCullough

Agriculture elective at McCullough

Have you ever wondered what the agriculture business environment was like? Well, there is a class at MCC just for that. Agriculture Is an elective you can take at MCC that gives you opportunities to get a little background information on the agricultural field. There are projects you do and activities you do to give you the experience to develop knowledge of agriculture. I interviewed Orla O’Neill who is in The Agriculture elective, and I asked her a few questions on what they do in that class.

During my interview with Orla, I asked her “Why did you choose this elective”, the answer I got back was surprising but needs to be discussed among others who feel this way. She had said, “During the new semester I didn’t exactly choose this elective to do, I knew no one who had that class and knew nothing about agriculture”. Her saying brings me to a very important issue. When you don’t want to do an elective or your parents make you do an elective, the best thing to do is give it a shot. You can’t hate it if you have never tried it. I then proceeded to ask her “Now that you have been in this class, do you think it is something you will do in the future?” Her response led her back to the first question I asked, and she responded with” Now that I have been in this class for a while I have developed a liking of it, I have realized it’s a great topic that is not widely talked about and is a very important thing in future career choosing. I asked her, “What are some projects you do in that class?” She said, “We do projects in the business field and help our economy, we also do projects where we look deeper into the agriculture field and look at all of the jobs in it”. I understand people who go into a more advanced class like this are scared of how hard it will be and how much homework you get, so I asked Orla “Is this class a difficult class to take?”. She responded, “This class is the easiest class I think I have ever taken, there is little to no homework, and the biggest thing you need to have is listening skills ‘.

One of the last questions I asked Orla was “Would you take this in high school?”. She then answered, “No, only because this is not the pathway I want to take”. Leading on from that topic, it’s okay to pick an elective and not stick with it through high school. High School is all about trying new things and finding what you love, and if agriculture isn’t it then that’s okay, but if it is something you would want to do, I would go for it!
